Liza Minnelli was reportedly forced to perform in a wheelchair at this year’s Academy Awards on March 28, 2022. At least that’s what Michael Feinstein, a friend of the actress and singer, claims.
Michael Feinstein said Minelli was “very disappointed” about her performance at the Oscars alongside Lady Gaga. Feinstein also adds: “It was sabotaged”. “That’s a terrible word, but she only agreed to perform at the Oscars if she would be in the director’s chair because she has back problems,” said the singer and pianist. She didn’t want people to see her limping and worry about her.
The process changed at short notice
Minelli and Lady Gaga jointly presented the Best Picture award. According to Michael Feinstein, plans changed five minutes before their performance. According to Feinstein, it was backstage – on the stage in a wheelchair or no performance. In the end, Minelli was forced to give in and came on stage in a wheelchair and not in a director’s chair, as she had requested. “She was nervous,” Feinstein said, “and seemed distracted. Can you imagine suddenly being forced to be seen by millions of people in a way you don’t want to be seen? That’s what happened to her.”
Minelli was frustrated
Finally, Feinstein emphasizes that Minelli is physically in good condition. However, the incident left its mark on the actress: “And she was very disappointed that this happened and that it was not what was agreed. So she’s doing really well, and it’s a shame it came to this. She was very disappointed.”
