Warning shot fired to arrest man with knife

The police fired a warning shot in the Smaragdstraat in Breda on Tuesday afternoon to arrest a man with a knife. That happened around half past five. Local residents raised the alarm shortly before. They had seen the man with a ‘big knife’ walking around the shopping center on Brabantplein, which is a little further away.

Rushing officers chased the man. He fled into a porch. Despite repeated calls from the police, the man refused to drop his knife.

According to a police spokesperson, a ‘threatening situation’ arose. The arrest took a lot of effort. The officers were forced to fire a warning shot. When that had little effect, the man was arrested with an electroshock weapon and the use of a police dog.

The detainee suffered bite wounds to his lower legs. He was taken to hospital by ambulance. The police could not yet say anything about the identity of the arrested man or the reason for his behavior.
