War has an impact on the supply of sunflower oil and alternatives
Seventy-five percent of the sunflower oil used comes from Ukraine and Russia, markets severely disrupted by the war.
And so there is a threat of scarcity here, and not just of sunflower oil, because everyone is looking for alternatives, which only makes the problem worse. Geert Vandaele, for example, is a sauce manufacturer. He does not immediately work with sunflower oil, which is now blocked in Ukraine, one of the largest producers. But because everyone is reaching for alternatives, he also gets into trouble.
Everything has become more expensive, not only the oil, but also other ingredients such as starch. And there are the sky-high energy bills.
