“In 2019, Roeselare commemorated 75 years of liberation by General Maczek’s First Polish Armored Division with the temporary and traveling exhibition ‘Armoured Wings/Armoured Wings’, a realization of the Flemish Government and the Polish government,” says the city of Roeselare.
“As a result of this exhibition, the Polish government intended to create a permanent memorial site and started looking for a city or municipality in Flanders that wanted to house the exhibition.
In 2021, the City of Roeselare committed to making this project a reality in collaboration with the Polish Historical Museum in Warsaw and the Polish government. The commitment resulted in a declaration of intent that same year, which was signed in the presence of the Polish ambassador. The City entered into a long-term lease agreement with the private owner of the German communications bunker from WWII in St-Hubrechtsstraat, to accommodate the exhibition there,” said the city of Roeselare
