Wanted: new caretaker for Brugse Halletoren
The caretaker will now retire on May 1. His successor will have to be at home in many markets. In exchange, he may live in the building. As a caretaker, you don’t just get a salary here. You also get a lot of responsibilities and the keys to one of the most special buildings in Bruges. Frank De Vos lived there for 33 years.
“Job with passion”
“I personally think it is one of the most beautiful houses in Bruges. A spacious apartment with three bedrooms with a view of the market, not to be sneezed at,” says Frank De Vos, the caretaker of the Halletoren in Bruges. According to De Vos, it is a job that you have to do with passion. It’s day and night.
“Day and night and you can take that very literally. You are also available at night for any incoming fire or burglary alarms. For sure… That feels like a very big responsibility. That’s my building, my tower Everything that comes in here must pass me.”
Restoration coming
He always kept the building in tip-top shape, but work is underway on the Halletoren, which dates back to the 13th century. A major restoration is underway. Many crowned heads also passed by here. Like the King of Spain, Margaret Thatcher and Mitterand.
The caretaker hopes to hand over the keys to the Halletoren to a worthy successor. In any case, he will miss his exceptional home and the whole building very much.
