Walking from Frederiksoord to Veenhuizen is no longer a punishment

She doesn’t look up to the 42 kilometers. “It’s quite a distance, but I’m a trained walker. I’ve done long distances before so that shouldn’t be a problem.”

Although everyone can walk the route at their own time, the organization plans to make the walking marathon a recurring event. “An annual event would be a nice boost for the area,” says Mayor Jager.

In the meantime, he is already thinking beyond national borders. “Perhaps you should think again about a connection with the Belgian colony. And whether you have to do that on foot or by bike, I leave it in the middle. But there is a Pieterpad, so who knows, there will also be another Koloniepad from Drenthe to the Belgian colonies.”

But before that happens, the organization first wants to see how the participants of the walking marathon have liked it. Tomorrow another group of 50 walkers will cover the 42 kilometers. They are asked to share their experiences.
