Walkers in the footsteps of the Benedictine sisters

Many walkers were able to enjoy themselves on Saturday afternoon between Gistel and Bruges. There found the Away from the sisters place: a historical experience tour, with which the walkers follow in the footsteps of the Benedictine nuns in 1578. The participants can start at 4 places along the route for a tour of 36, 22, 10 or 5 kilometres. At the start, on the way and at the arrival, the participants become extensively acquainted with the spirituality and rich history of the Benedictine sisters. Flemish Minister of Tourism Zuhal Demir walks along the last 5 kilometers: “This unique and meaningful tour is not only historically and touristically very valuable, but also the tragic story of Sint-Godelieve, who died due to partner violence, is unfortunately still alive today. still very topical.” Saint Godelieve Abbey in Bruges is the final destination where VISITFLANDERS is building a new future for the abbey 400 years after its foundation.

The participating walkers receive an experience guide that is further supplemented at each start or stop. Information boards and podcasts tell the fascinating story of the sisters along the way. All walkers receive a scarf with the ‘Weg van de sisters’ logo. This refers to the unfortunate fate of Saint Godelieve. The scarf would later become Sint-Godelieve’s trademark.

The proceeds of the trip will go to the community of volunteers who will soon find shelter in the Sint-Godelieveabdij.
