Wales beat Ukraine in play-offs for World Cup ticket by own goal

Wales has put an end to the Ukrainian national team’s dream of qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar, which will take place at the end of November. The team, which includes star player Gareth Bale in the starting line-up, won 1-0 in Cardiff on Sunday through an own goal from Andri Jarmolenko.

The players of Ukraine took the field with the Ukrainian flag on their shoulders. The Cardiff City Stadium was completely sold out and the section was also well filled, partly with Ukrainian refugees who had received a free ticket.

On Thursday, Ukraine won 3-1 against Scotland. It was the first official international match since Russia’s invasion in February. The national competition was then stopped and the play-offs in which Ukraine was supposed to participate were postponed. Six of the eleven Ukrainian basic players play for clubs from their own country. Many of them had barely played in recent months.

Wales have qualified for the World Cup for the first time since 1958, for the second time in history. The country will meet England, Iran and the United States in group B at the World Cup.
