The number of meat offers has fallen for the first time since 2015, animal welfare organization Wakker Dier reports. Since that year, he has been structurally monitoring the brochures of the stores.
The number of stunts involving meat and meat products decreased at many supermarket chains in the first half of this year, says Wakker Dier. The largest decreases were seen at Albert Heijn (-366), Hoogvliet (-249) and Dirk (-203). They were observed in chicken (-279), beef (-365) and pork (-598). The organization compared the offers with the numbers of stunts over the same period of the previous year.
Wakker Dier says it is striking that the number of offers for meat substitutes remained virtually the same (+29).
The club believes that the development may have to do with the signing of the climate agreement. Promises made therein can only be fulfilled by supermarkets “by continuing this meat decrease quickly”, according to the spokeswoman. “That is best for the climate and the animals.”
