For the second day in a row, the holiday exodus from the port of Dover on Saturday is very rough, with up to 4 hours of waiting at passport controls. Truck drivers also have to wait a long time on the roads around Dover. The French border police is struggling with a staff shortage.
About 10,000 cars will pass through the port of Dover on Saturday, some 1,500 more than Friday, BBC News reports. This has to do with the school holidays, which have started in England and Wales. P&O Ferries asked travelers to allow for waiting times of three to four hours to go through all security and French border controls.
About 3,000 trucks are queuing on the M20 motorway towards Dover.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has called on France to act against “completely avoidable” delays at the border. She said there were not enough staff for border controls in France.
However, on the French side, Brexit is being pointed out as the cause of the chaos. “We need to carry out more checks than before,” French MP Pierre-Henri Dumont told BBC News.
