A new generation of Belgian rappers is Nederland aan het veroveren met aanstekelijke, light tracks that can be sent via TikTok to the top of the list. Maar hoe komt het dat artisten as Katnuf, Jinho 9 en Brysa in own country less successful zijn? ‘Vlaanderen loops eight.’
“How is Anas ‘Katnuf’ Kasmi, maker of the summer hit of 2022?”, kopte de Volkskrant and Augustus. Het answer: Kasmi is the eighth ‘Van mij zijn’, een light and dansbaar lieddesliedje dat vandaag nog steeds in de top vijf van de Nederlandse hitparade op Spotify staat met 15 million streams. In Belgium, ‘Van mij zijn’ is not yet raised on the 37th place in the Ultratop. Katnuf is still alive when it is 6 years old in our country and is not considered when it is built in Amsterdam, but Roeselare is considered a real thuis.
Katnuf is not the only country that does better in the Netherlands than there are. Tussen de nieuwe nummers van David Guetta en Sam Smith vind je in de Nederlandse hitlijsten ook de Ninoofse rapper Jinho 9, who in één week drie miljoen streams bij elkaar raapte met de zwoele clubtrack ‘Blind op zoek (Trapagas)’. The Mechelse rapper Makar staat met ‘Mood’ al what verder in de lijst, maar heeft in de rest van de wereld het most succes: dankzij toptwintignoteringen in Zwitserland en Duitsland – voor een Nederlandstalig nummer – staat het nummer op 33 miljoen streams.
A real Belgian scene in the Netherlands is not there, but the behavior of the successful rappers is very good. Zo zijn Jinho 9 and Katnuf best vrienden. “As a child, keek ik al naar Junior Eurovision Song Festival in The Voice Kids, but I’ve had my music for a long time,” says Katnuf. “Pas tijdens de lockdown in 2020 vond ik de moed om a few numbers online te zetten. Jinho vond the tracks ‘hard’ en stuurde me een berichtje. Een tijdje later we were in the studio in the Prutsen. Toen Jinho op de wc zat, I wanted to have a stock clicked on zijn pc.”
That stock was said to be ‘interesting’, a number was given for the two met with another Belgian work, Jiriel Thunder. The track went viral immediately: around 60,000 TikTok users used it as a soundtrack for their own film projects. “Daarvoor had ik al geprekken met labels, maar die zagen me nauwelijks staan omdat ik nog geen viral hit had”, says Jinho 9. “Zo gaat dat tegenwoordig: je moet je own earning model hebben uitgebouwd voor ze je tekenen.” Na ‘Interesting’ sprang Sony wel op de kar.

Makar kent Katnuf nor Jinho personally, maar zijn verhaal is longer hetzelfde. Oorspronkelijk wilde hej acteur been en met grapige filmpjes on Facebook kreeg hej zijn first public bij elkaar. A parody op mumble rappers much zo in de smaak dat zijn best vriend, which is now zijn manager, hem overtuigde om zelf muziek te gaan maken. A week before the release of ‘Mood’ when he’s going on the way to TikTok, so he’s going to have a hit was still going to be the full number.
No one can go outside of the Netherlands and come up with options in the Netherlands, but Bryan Mg never did. De Gentse rapper scoort nochtans al jaren meer streams boven dan onder de Belgisch-Nederlandse grens. “Het something I can say, that’s what I said in the Netherlands. That’s why the urban scene is much more important. Kijk maar naar FunX.” Bryan does op de radiozender die avenue maar genres as hiphop, r&b en dancehall draait en vooral populair is bij jongeren in de grote steden.
Jinho 9 speelde he twee jaar gegeden al een session, for some big hits. “De Nederlanders zijn hyena’s”, says Makar. “Zodra ze je talent zien, try ze je within te halen.” Katnuf weet uit het hoofd dat 78 percent van zijn luisteraars uit Nederland komt. “Ik hou van België, maar voor my career is better in the Netherlands. The urban scene in the country loops eighth above what it is about. Bijna all producers are quoted there and ever raised by wijze van spreken in elke straat een studio.”
Historical aft stand
The aft stand is historic. Spotify was a year earlier available in the Netherlands and in Belgium and on our noorderburen speelden veel quickly in op de wereldwijde opmars van hiphop. The main focus is on the New Wave project: on the other hand, the two rappers and producers in 2015 on the Schiermonnikoog om buiten te komen met a gezamenlijke plaat, waarop onder meer ‘Drank en drugs’ van Ronnie Flex en Lil’ Kleine stonden.
With that immediately toegankelijke Nederlandstalige rap heeft Vlaanderen het nog steeds moeilijk, en not all omdat he keer zoveel Nederlanders als Vlamingen zijn. The rappers who have great success, zingen in their own streektaal (Brihang, Tourist LeMC) or zetten zich af van de mainstream (Dvtch Norris, Zwangere Guy).
Niet dat de Belgen niet welkom zijn in Nederland: het popular rapvideoplatform 101Barz verwelkomt regelmatig landgenoten, other rappers as Zwangere Guy and Freddie Konings also met hun Nederlandse collega’s samenwerken, maar een hit zo groot is als ‘Van mij zijn’ leverde dat tot voor kort Niet op.
“He is wel iets aan het geuren,” thinks Makar. Begin that year the Kesselse rapper Brysa aan de Zijde van Cristian D and Ashafar nog a numberéénhit in Nederland met ‘Amsterdam‘. Wawa, de Aalstenaar pas nog opdook in the VRT MAX documentary Plan ALike two years ago he was successful in proving to be the same with Dutch Kempi 18 million streams packages for ‘Ondernemer’.
Come the great Vlaamse golf van streaming rap dan toch op gang via Nederland? Everybody expresses great ambitions, Makar heeft zelfs bij Universal Duitsland getekend and empties nu in a short tempo de taal van Goethe. Bryan Mg heft nog a wheel for the new generation. “Het komt er nu op aan om niet aan die ene hit te blijven plakken.”
