VW shares & Co: No recovery in sight – war in Ukraine exacerbates delivery bottlenecks for new hybrids and electric cars

Actually, the availability of cars should recover completely in 2022 – at least that was the forecast. However, since the Ukraine plays an important role in vehicle sales in Germany, this will probably take a few more years, reports the magazine “auto motor und sport” with reference to a new study by AlixPartners. Sales will drop from 80.3 million vehicles worldwide to 78.9 million in 2022.

One reason for the decline in sales is the war in Ukraine

It doesn’t matter which model or which drive it is. auto motor und sport quotes Fabian Piontek from AlixPartners: “Last year the automotive industry recovered from the effects of the pandemic, also thanks to government support programs [] As a result of the war in the Ukraine, manufacturers and suppliers have had to face a disruption for the second time in a very short space of time, which is provoking significant outages and the course of which is unpredictable.” The ADAC also reports on the tense situation on the automobile market. “That the situation relaxed in the short term is not to be expected,” the website reads.

The main reason for this is a lack of chips and cable harnesses, for the production of which many car manufacturers are dependent on manufacturers in the Ukraine. While cable harnesses have to be installed in the vehicle at a very early stage and their absence delays further construction accordingly, according to the ADAC, chips are only installed later. The problem here lies in the fact that hardly any chips have been pre-ordered in recent months: storage is expensive and the parts have an expiry date. Now they can’t be replenished fast enough for car manufacturers to be able to meet demand.

E-Cars: Delivery times of up to 20 months

The delivery times for e-cars and plug-in hybrids are apparently particularly long. The new car market carwow recently published an evaluation according to which an e-car or hybrid can sometimes only be delivered up to 20 months after the order. According to the results of the evaluation, the three e-cars with the longest delivery times are the AUDI Q4 e-tron (up to 20 months), the BMWi4 and the KODA Enyaq iV (up to 18 months each). The hybrids are the Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV (up to 20 months), the Mercedes-Benz C-Class PHEV (up to 15 months) and the Jaguar E-Pace plug-in hybrid (up to 14 months). According to the evaluation, the average for all e-cars and hybrid vehicles is eleven months – it is particularly noticeable that there is currently a temporary order freeze for many e-cars.

Delivery bottlenecks lead to higher vehicle prices

According to AlixPartners, in addition to the supply bottleneck for chips and cable harnesses, the increased demand for e-cars and hybrids is also a reason for the longer delivery times. The demand increases 10-fold compared to that for combustion engines. What is good news for the climate is now thwarting consumers’ plans: according to auto motor und sport, the prices for e-cars and hybrids are rising differently than in recent years due to the higher costs for battery production back to. Vehicle prices are also rising accordingly – for people in Germany this coincides with the end of state subsidies for the purchase of e-cars and hybrids.

By the way: Anyone who is surprised by the current delivery times and has to wait longer than expected for the new car can defend themselves against long delays. The ADAC states that you can withdraw from a purchase contract if a binding delivery period is exceeded by six weeks plus a two-week grace period, or if a non-binding delivery period is exceeded by four months. The grace period for a binding delivery date must be set in writing by the customer.
