VW sales in January benefit from strong recovery in China

FRANKFURT (Dow Jones)–The Volkswagen Group increased its global car sales by double digits in January thanks to strong demand in China. Sales increased by 13.3 percent to 698,300 vehicles, the automaker announced. While deliveries in Western Europe and North America fell slightly, sales in China climbed by 43.3 percent to 290,900 vehicles. The country is once again the largest market for the VW Group. 17,700 of the cars sold in China were fully electric models.

In the previous year, business in China was characterized by Covid restrictions. In addition, unlike this year, the New Year celebrations fell in January. However, VW China has also demonstrated strength in this highly competitive market environment, the company explained.

In Western Europe, deliveries fell by 3 percent to 224,600 cars, and in North America by 1 percent to 66,300.

By brand, growth in VW brand cars was particularly significant, with an increase of 18 percent, followed by Audi with an increase of 13.2 percent.
