Professional cyclist Lennard Kämna narrowly missed his second stage win in the Tour of Spain despite a late fall.
A week after his day’s victory, the 26-year-old from the German racing steel Bora-hansgrohe landed in second place in the sprint of a three-man leading group on the medium-difficulty 15th stage. Kämna fell three kilometers before the end, but fought back.
The day’s victory in Lekunberri went to the Portuguese former world champion Rui Costa from the Intermarche-Circus-Wanty team after 158.3 km – Santiago Buitrago from Colombia came third.
Defending champion Remco Evenepoel, who no longer has anything to do with the decision in the overall classification after a slump on Friday, dictated events at the top for a long time, but did not get past fourth place.
Kuss defends the red jersey
The red jersey of the overall leader was successfully defended without any major problems by the American Sepp Kuss, who rolled to the finish a short time later in the peloton.
He is still ahead of his teammates at Jumbo-Visma, the three-time title winner Primoz Roglic from Slovenia (+ 1:37 minutes) and the Danish tour winner Jonas Vingegaard, who entered the final week of the tour 1:44 minutes behind after the rest day on Monday goes.
Costa had attacked alongside Buitrago on the last of the day’s three minor toxic climbs. At first none of the riders in the former leading group could follow the duo, but Kämna continued and caught up with the two before the summit.
About three kilometers before the finish, he fell while trying to overtake his opponents on a descent. He landed comparatively softly on a piece of grass, followed suit and only had to admit defeat in the final sprint.
