Vuelta a España: Evenepoel extends overall lead with victory

Leader Remco Evenepoel has won the individual time trial of the Tour of Spain. On Tuesday (08/30/22) after 30.9 kilometers from Elche to Alicante, the Belgian professional cyclist was 48 seconds faster than last year’s second-placed winner, Primoz Roglic.

Third was France’s Remy Cavagna, who needed a minute more than his teammate Evenepoel. In the overall standings, Evenepoel increased his lead to 2:41 minutes ahead of Roglic from Slovenia.

Hayter and Bennett tested positive

Meanwhile, the Corona cases are piling up. The Brit Ethan Hayter no longer competed in the time trial, as his team Ineos had announced. Two-time stage winner Sam Bennett also tested positive on Tuesday morning, the German team Bora-hansgrohe said on Twitter. On the rest day on Monday, the Dane Mathias Norsgaard from the Movistar team tested positive.

Since the Vuelta started on August 19, more than a dozen drivers have been eliminated due to positive corona findings. At the Tour de France, 17 professionals who tested positive had to end the race prematurely in July.
