There must be more predictability thanks to the corona barometer, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo (Open Vld) announced at the Consultation Committee last week. According to the preliminary advice of corona commissioner Pedro Facon, the corona barometer will have three colors: green, orange and red. For each color, three sectors are considered: public events (cinema, football match, music festival), organized social life (choir, sports activity, lecture) and catering. It also takes into account activities that take place indoors or outdoors and that take place sitting or standing.

Even if the corona barometer shows red, we will no longer go into full lockdown. The cafes and restaurants will also remain open, albeit under conditions, such as a closing time at 11 p.m. and a maximum of six people at the table. As we already know it today. A slight relaxation compared to today would be that football matches could also take place with a seated audience. Discos will remain closed. Standing concerts and dance parties also remain prohibited at a red barometer.

It is striking what is NOT mentioned in the advice. “It contains nothing about education, about shops, about teleworking, nor about our contacts at home,” said VTM reporter Hannelore Simoens.

Green means there is virus circulation with no impact on the healthcare system.

With greenery there is no limitation on the capacity of a seated event such as a theater performance. There is also no need for a Covid ticket, the new term for the Covid Safe Ticket, and mouth masks are not required either.

Orange means that the virus circulation is increasing, which also increases the pressure on the healthcare system.

Orange means a maximum capacity of 1,000 to 2,000 people in a theater room, but that could depend on the size of the room and other factors such as ventilation. The Covid ticket is then mandatory from 50 people and the mouth mask is also mandatory.

Red means that there is a lot of virus circulation and there is a high risk of overloading the healthcare system.

With red, the capacity, in the example of the theater performance, may be further limited to 200 to 500 people. Eating and drinking is no longer allowed.

For a moving audience, the rules become even stricter, with even fewer people. Music festivals will then even be banned altogether.

This is a provisional advice. Corona Commissioner Facon wants to have the final version ready this weekend. Next week, the definitive corona barometer may then be knocked on the Consultation Committee. “If it doesn’t happen now, the government will really lose face,” concludes Hannelore Simoens.
