Volvo Cars decided last year to no longer develop new combustion engines. “Electric drives are our future and are superior to combustion engines: they provide less noise, less vibration, lower maintenance costs and no emissions,” said CEO Jim Rowan.
According to Volvo Cars, the decision to move away from diesel cars early next year shows “how quickly both the automotive industry and customer demand are changing in the face of the climate crisis.” In 2019, the majority of cars sold by Volvo Cars in Europe still had a diesel engine.
The car manufacturer also has a large production facility in Ghent.
