When the Berlin Volleys compete in the Volleyball Bundesliga against Netzhoppers Königs Wusterhausen on Tuesday, the roles are clearly assigned.
“We are the clear favorites,” said Volleys managing director Kaweh Niroomand before the game (8 p.m./Dyn). Of the 38 Berlin-Brandenburg derbies in the Bundesliga so far, the German champions only lost one – on February 18, 2012 with 2:3.
However, a conflict accompanies the volleys on the way to the Paul-Dinter-Halle in Königs Wusterhausen. “On the one hand,” said Niroomand, “we have to ensure that our team gets into a rhythm, but on the other hand, such games also offer the opportunity for the burden on our broad squad to be placed on other shoulders.”
The Volleys are aware that their start to the season was quite bumpy despite the 3-1 win against Giesen. “If I were to say that we put 50 percent of our potential on the field in the game, I would be exaggerating,” criticized Niroomand.
Everything is new at the Netzhoppers this season: the entire team, the coach, the home stadium. Even the addition “Bestensee” was deleted from the club’s name. Coach Alejandro Kolevich has a squad at his disposal in which outside attacker Daniel Hähnert is the oldest player at 25 years old. A six-point deduction for licensing offenses in the previous season is additional ballast.
