Volleyball, women’s A-1: Cuneo hits the PalaEur in Rome

Pistola’s comeback team takes a step forward in terms of the playoffs. The regret of the capitoline struggling for salvation

Acqua & Sapone Roma wasted a great opportunity by losing 3-2 with Cuneo. The Giallorossi at the tie-break seemed to have the ball in the game, with a decent margin, but in the end it is the Piedmontese who win.

Rome-Cuneo 2-3 (21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 17-25, 14-16)

In a very hard-fought first set it is Bosca San Bernardo who stretches several times and maintains the advantage thanks to the precious points of Squarcini (6) and Gicquel (5) and the good direction of Spirito. The Giallorossi appear ineffective and coach Mafrici tries to restore concentration by calling the time-out (15-19). The Wolves react with Klimets (6 points) and Trnkova (5), but it is then the Piedmontese who close with Kuznetsova on 21-25. In the second fraction, the Giallorossi have a very strong start (3-0). The guests, in particular with Gicquel, react (9-9) and then go ahead (14-18). Rome tries to get back on top, but Signorile and her companions do not let go, thanks to an excellent defense and attack (21-24). Then, unexpectedly, the hosts bring home the set to the advantages (26-24) thanks to a consecutive series of guest mistakes. Another excellent run for Klimets (6 points) and Trnkova (7). Cuneo starts again in a disruptive way after the lost set (7-11), the wolves react, recover (14-14) and force Pistola to time-out. Rome finds concentration and concreteness, Klimets sinks mercilessly into the opponent’s half (6 points) and the Giallorossi who lead to 22-19. Cuneo calls time-out, but it is still Acqua e Sapone to sink with Trnkova (5) and to close the set with Bugg (25-22). In the fourth set, the Piedmontese have the best start (8-16), with Degradi above all. The capitoline appear mentally blurred, also thanks to the injury to Klimets’ hand, and suffer the targeted attacks of the guests. At 13-21 coach Mafrici calls the time-out, but the gap accumulated is too much and ends at 17-25. We reach the tie-break with Roma who seems to have found the polish lost in the previous set (6-3) and with Klimets who stoically returns to the field. Pistol calls the time-out, but the Giallorossi continue to hammer the Cuneo defense (12-9). The Piedmontese do not give up and grab a draw (13-13). At 14-14 the guests take the lead first and then close at 14-16. For Rome a precious point in terms of salvation, but the awareness of having wasted a delicious opportunity. (Simone Corbetta)
