Volleyball, Superlega: Perugia more and more mistress, Piacenza ko

Despite the absence of Giannelli, Grbic’s team is increasingly at the top of the standings

Perugia-Piacenza 3-1 (25-18, 19-25, 29-27, 25-20)
The fantastic moment of Perugia continues, beating Piacenza in four sets, conquering the nineteenth victory in 21 Superlega games, consolidating the leadership in the standings. The return to PalaBarton of Lorenzo Bernardi was therefore bitter, who for three years remained at the helm of Perugia, winning the historic treble with the Italian Super Cup, the Italian Cup (also won the following year) and the Scudetto, or the first trophies in the history of the Umbrian club, to then repeat the victory in the Cup in the following year.

Emergency

Initially the coach Nikola Grbic deployed Travica (Giannelli influenced on the bench) in the direction, Rychlicki opposite, Mengozzi and Solè in the middle, Leon and Anderson spikers and the returning Colaci free. On the other hand Piacenza (without Lagumdzija) responded with Brizard in directing, Stern opposite, Holt and Cester in the middle, Rossard and Recine spikers, with Scanferla free. The first fraction saw Perugia ahead from the initial stages, and then progressively lengthened taking advantage of some uncertainties on the part of Piacenza and going to close (25-18) with a guest error on a reception from Travica. The situation was reversed in the second set with Piacenza (with the former Russell in place of an off Rossard) who found himself in the lead from the beginning and on this margin he built a rather clear success, preventing, thanks also to well 5 blocks, each reaction to Perugia, who then gave the final point (19-25) with an attacking error from Solè. In the third set it was Perugia starting strong again, stretching up to 10-6, and then moving on to 18-13, but at this point there was the reaction of Bernardi’s men who reached parity at 21-21 thanks to an ever incisive Russell (best scorer of the match with 18 points). From then on it was a real battle, before Perugia’s success with Recine’s mistake in batting and then Stern’s crash (29-27), who fell to the ground when attacking. In the fourth set, Sir Safety went ahead at 6-1 and consolidated their lead on 11-5. Then there was the decisive extension thanks to the always lucid direction of Travica (MVP) and finding the best Leon (best scorer of Perugia with 17 points) of the evening and going to conclude the match (25-20) with an attack of Rychlicki bricked out.
