The German volleyball players started the second phase of the World Cup with a defeat and only have a slim chance of reaching the quarter-finals.

The team of national coach Vital Heynen lost to Turkey, third at the European Championships, in Lodz, Poland, 0:3 (21:25, 18:25, 21:25) and continued their negative series. Germany ended the first group stage with three defeats.

Clear guidance is not enough

The German team experienced a game of wasted chances against the Turks trained by ex-national coach Giovanni Guidetti: In the first set, the thread broke after a five-point lead, in the second round after a 7:4 lead, in the third one was enough 17:14 lead not. The best German scorer was Jennifer Janiska with 13 points.

In order to reach the quarterfinals, the Heynen team must secure at least fourth place in the group of eight – currently it is last. The next opponents are Thailand (Wednesday, 3:00 p.m.), Dominican Republic (Friday, 7:00 p.m.) and on Saturday, co-hosts Poland (8:30 p.m.). All teams are ahead of Germany in the world rankings.
