Volleyball, DVV Cup: BR Volleys cup winner for the sixth time by beating Düren

Status: 02/27/2023 10:43 a.m

The BR Volleys have won the DVV Cup for the sixth time. In a rather average cup final, an increase in performance from the second set onwards was enough for the expected triumph over the SWD powervolleys Düren.

The BR Volleys are German Volleyball Cup winners for the 6th time. In Mannheim, coach Cedric Enard’s team beat the SWD power volleys Düren 3-1 sets (22:25, 17:25, 21:15, 25:18). Only in the first round did the favorite have problems against carefree players from Düren, who still have to wait for their first cup success due to the deserved defeat. Volleys player Johannes Tille was voted player of the game.

Shared title dreams in Potsdam and Berlin

SC Potsdam and BR Volleys have already won the first titles of the season. In Mannheim, the two top teams in the region are striving to win the cup. For the women from Potsdam it’s against Schwerin. The Berliners meet Düren. By Lynn Kraemer more

Volleys erratic and flawed, Niroomand unsatisfied

In front of 9,000 spectators in Mannheim, the leader of the volleyball league initially got into the game better. In the middle block, Anton Brehme and Nehemiah Mote were immediately in the game and quickly brought the volleys 6:2 in front. Düren was forced to take a first break early on. But the power volleys improved immediately and pulled away to 11:9 before Cedric Enard had to take the first time-out for Berlin, because his team was now acting too erratically and incorrectly.

But the sluggishness continued in the game of volleys, while Düren continued to show a strong performance in the person of setter Tomas Kocian. A service winner by Eric Burggräf even put Düren in the lead with 21:18. But Berlin fought back again. Cody Kessel used the momentum of his entry and the volleys shortened to 22:21. Düren stayed cool, used a challenge to collect himself again and had three set balls at 24:21. Significant: Volleys captain Ruben Schott caused the 0:1 set deficit from the point of view of the Berliners due to the 10th serve error of the set.

Volleys manager Kaweh Niroomand was correspondingly critical of his team’s performance during the break: “Düren plays outstandingly, plays loosely. The serve doesn’t work for us at all. I hope we can get it sorted out.”

Volleys boost

And Niroomand’s request was implemented immediately by volleys at the beginning of the second set. Two long rallies went to the volleys, with diagonal attacker Marek Sotola showing his class and giving the Berlin team a 4-0 lead with a lightning start. Again Düren called the time-out early in the set, but this time there was no break in the volley game. Outside attacker Timothée Carle made it 9:5 for the volleys with a strong diagonal ball, although Düren didn’t let himself be shaken off in this phase. At 10:8 Enard took the time out to swear in his men again. And the Polish winger Marcin Ernastowicz kept Düren in the game, but the volleys didn’t let themselves be deterred and extended the lead to 17:12 through improved serve and good blocking. Cody Kessel finally converted the first set ball to 25:17.

The beginning of the third set was similar to how the second set ended. The volleys showed their strengths at the net and took a 8:5 lead thanks to a strong block by Nehemiah Mote. The ailing captain Ruben Schott also slowly found his way into the game, while Düren was no longer able to take advantage of his second chances in attack. But Düren came back to 13:12 because the volleys made too many mistakes again. But the volleys came better and even an interruption caused by an alleged injury to libero Satoshi Tsuiki couldn’t stop the volleys. Tsuiki continued and the Berliners clearly won the set 25:15.

BR Volleys advance to quarterfinals of Champions League

The international BR volleyball season continues. In the deciding game, the Berliners defeated Ziraat Bank Ankara in a tie-break and entered the quarter-finals of the Champions League.more

Berlin’s playful class prevails

The Berliners now had the momentum completely on their side, while the challenger from Düren also missed the beginning of the 4th set and conceded two breaks again early on. Another block by Mote put the volleys ahead 8:4 and only the boldest optimists in Mannheim’s SAP Arena gave the outsider from Düren a chance to win the cup. But the power volleys didn’t give up, came up to a point in the middle of the sentence, but overall had nothing to oppose the callousness and the playful class of the Berliners.

A short time later, after 1994, 1996, 2000, 2016 and 2020, the Berliners celebrated the deserved 6th cup win in their club history with the 25:18.
