Despite the trio’s efforts, the show seems to be falling flat, leaving many wondering if Genee can sustain his relevance without the iconic Johan Derksen by his side.
Disappointing Ratings
The debut episode of “Mi Dushi” attracted only 340,000 viewers, placing it third in its time slot, well behind “Tussen Kunst en Kitsch” with 656,000 viewers and “Zomergasten” with 401,000 viewers. These figures represent a significant decline, as media authority Tina Nijkamp pointed out, with an average viewing time of just 57 minutes. This drop in linear viewing time is alarming, as audiences increasingly only tune in for news and sports.
Sweet Yet Shallow Conversations
The program lacks depth, presenting insipid discussions that induce eye-rolls rather than engaging audiences. Brard and her husband expressed undying love for each other, asserting that they will never leave one another. Genee appeared enamored by their mutual affection, though many viewers likely found it excessively saccharine. A moment threatening to delve into intimate territory was promptly deflected by Brard, who chose discretion over shock, asserting that affection is more significant than physical intimacy.
“This is Awkward”
In what seemed like an ill-advised move, Genee veered into references from his former show “Vandaag Inside.” He commented on how he felt a familiar sense from that program, suggesting that he struggled to adapt to the newer, more sensitive format of “Mi Dushi.” Victor Vlam, a television critic, expressed his disappointment regarding this back-and-forth acknowledgment, emphasizing that Genee’s new show should serve as a platform to display his versatility rather than evoke memories of his past glories.

Despite its shortcomings, Vlam found aspects of the show to appreciate. He praised the picturesque backdrop of Curaçao and commended the program’s editing, drawing parallels to “Casa di Beau.” The ambiance appears inviting, featuring hearty meals and group activities, creating a visually appealing environment. However, Vlam hinted that the show’s success may be fleeting as future episodes shift focus away from Brard, raising the question of viewer interest.
