Ankara off to a better start

The hosts laid the foundation for their first set win in the duel with the reigning German champions in the middle of the first set. After a balanced start, Ankara used a period of weakness in the volleys to pull away from 8:7 to 14:8. A deficit from which the guests could not recover until the end of the sentence.

In the second period, the volleys then benefited from a change of player. Head coach Cedric Enard brought in Johannes Tille for Angel Trinidad, enlivening his side’s attacking game. The volleys now played more dynamically and were able to make the second set more open. However, two close challenge decisions at 10:11 and 10:12 from Berlin’s point of view shifted the momentum back to the hosts’ side shortly afterwards. They only pulled away to 16:11 and subsequently also won set number two.

After the Berliners were able to turn around a 2-0 deficit against Hebar Pazardzhik from Bulgaria in the first group game, they failed to do so in Ankara on Wednesday. Although they won the third section 25:22, they still missed a promising 22:19 lead in the fourth set. The Volleys, in which the Czech Marek Sotola was the best man with 19 points, suffered their first defeat in the second Champions League game of the season.
