VfB Friedrichshafen has made a successful start to the next playoff round: The “Häfler” team won the first semi-final duel in the Bundesliga volleyball league against SVG Lüneburg by a narrow margin of 3:2.
A duel at eye level developed between the weakened VfB Friedrichshafen and SVG Lüneburg. Only at the end of the first set did the Häflers pull away and won it 25:20. In the second set, the Lüneburg hosts turned up the heat, the guests lost the thread a bit. So VfB got the short end of the stick with 17:25.
In the third period, Friedrichshafen, who was third in the main round, was more consistent and took the lead 2:1 (25:21). The fourth section initially started with advantages for the gaming community from Lüneburg. VfB are working their way back up, but then lost 19:25.
Game will be decided in tie-break
So the decision had to be made in the tie-break. And here VfB had the momentum on their side again. In the end, thanks to Luciano Vicentin’s converted match ball to the SVG block, coach Mark Lebedew’s team was able to celebrate the 15:12 in set five and thus the victory that gave them a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series brings. In addition, VfB diagonal attacker Michal Superlak was voted MVP, the best player of the game.
Thanks to the success, VfB still has every chance of winning the first German championship title since 2015. In the quarter-finals he had himself prevailed against the Grizzlies Giesen.
Season off for Ziga Stern
Even before the game, the “Häfler” suffered a setback for the rest of the playoffs. Outside attacker Ziga Stern suffered a head injury in a collision during training. After medical examinations, the 29-year-old will be out for four to six weeks and thus for the rest of the season. Vojin Cacic, Simon Kohn and Miguel Martinez were also absent.
