De Volkskrant confirms the rumor that the newspaper is working on a revealing article about Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. “The article is in the final stage and will be published one of these days.”
It has been whispered for a few months now that journalist Maud Effting is working on a revealing Volkskrant article about Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. He was never really reprimanded for his alleged violent behavior behind the scenes on the former television hit De Wereld Draait Door, but that now seems to be changing.
Volkskrant unpacks
Matthijs has been anticipating the upcoming settlement for a while, because fellow newspaper De Telegraaf gave the push in June. The newspaper then reported a “tyrannical presenter” who maintained a “culture of fear” for years. Although no names were mentioned, it was clear to everyone: this is about Matthijs.
Apparently reason for de Volkskrant to delve deeper into it. Reportedly, BNNVARA subsequently threatened its own (former) employees with legal action if they talked to the newspaper. The broadcaster denies this: “Obviously we would never put pressure on employees. BNNVARA attaches great importance to freedom of expression.”
‘It’s coming’
At the beginning of this month, the whisper about this revealing Volkskrant article suddenly gained a national stage. Writer Ronit Palache then named the article live in the talk show Khalid & Sophie: “We have been working on an article about a certain talk show host for a very long time. (…) Who? I’m not going to bring that up now.”
Shownieuws has now received confirmation from de Volkskrant that this piece is indeed coming. The program speaks of a ‘destructive’ article. “We even called today, because we heard the rumor that it would be published this weekend,” said show expert Bart Ettekoven last night.
Finishing phase
Bart and his colleagues were already ready. “We were already waiting at the letterbox for the Volkskrant and I think Matthijs van Nieuwkerk too, because he will also be curious about what it says about him. Indeed, De Volkskrant confirms that they are working on an article, but it will not be published this weekend.”
However, it won’t last very long. “The article is in a ‘final phase’. That could mean it will be published one of these days, maybe next week. So it will be exciting.”
‘BNNVARA not happy’
According to Bart, the article is about Matthijs’ time at DWDD. “From: what happened and what didn’t happen? And: what is true about the stories that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk was such an incredibly difficult man for his editors and producers?”
According to the entertainment expert, BNNVARA is absolutely not happy with it, as he is the broadcaster’s celebrated star. “I don’t think they’re there waiting for him to be razed to the ground.”
