Wim Jonk, FC Volendam’s trainer, saw a cherished wish come true with the promotion. The 55-year-old Jonk started working as a trainer in the fishing village in 2019 with the ambition to return to the Eredivisie.
“We had a nice plan three years ago and that it will come true within three years is super cool,” said 55-year-old Jonk after the 2-1 win over FC Den Bosch in front of ESPN’s camera. At the insistence of the former player of Ajax and PSV, a professionalization took place at the club from North Holland.
FC Volendam has performed less in recent weeks, but Jonk’s formation managed to recover in time. “After a difficult phase, we have straightened ourselves again. We have scored points at the right moments and won crucial matches,” said Jonk, who almost saw his team lose a lead in the hectic final phase.
“Such a ball from the line is part of this game. You try to see if you can still coach, but some players are no longer available. If the connection is no longer there, you will get into trouble. I am very proud of them We are now going to have a good party first and then think about next season later.”
FC Volendam last played at the highest level in the 2008-2009 season.
