The sails have been hoisted and hard work is already being done on the Volendammer quacks, because the battle will break out during the Pieperrace next week. “I think it will be a great event,” says Cor Klein of the Pieperrace Foundation enthusiastically. It is the first time in two years that the event with the boats will start again.
This competition for traditional sailing ships honors the memory of how the Volendammer Kwakken (large botters that were only found in Volendam) were used during the Second World War to sail potatoes (piepers) from Friesland. The pagers were destined, among other things, for the Amsterdam hospitals.
Ready for the race
The organization is almost ready for the race. “Everything that needs to be arranged has been arranged for 90 percent,” says Cor Klein. There are currently about 30 registrations. “We expect a full port.” According to Cor, there are also a lot of registrations coming in on the day itself.
Rico prepares the VD84 for the race. Text continues below the report.
In addition to a full harbour, the boats provide even more excitement in the fishing village. Cor: “Spring has just started, we think it’s the start of the tourist season.” In addition to the event in the water, there is also plenty to do on land.
“This year, harbor parties will also be coupled,” explains Cor. “There will be large party tents with Volendam artists such as Jan Smit. That will be a nice extensive program.” The Piepperrace Foundation notices that it also lives outside Volendam. “I think it’s going to be a really big event.”
Volendam will be dominated by the Pieperrace on 2 and 3 April. NH Nieuws will report live on this event on 3 April.
