Volendam houses under water: “I could cry about it”

The high water caused a lot of damage in the Zuideinde district. At least seven cellars there were flooded. Local residents are especially angry because the municipality should have intervened earlier. “It almost makes me cry because it’s not normal.”

The cellars in Simon Schilder’s street are completely flooded. He lives on the Zuideinde dike, near the Slobbeland recreational area. On Monday he saw that the high water was lapping against the dike, but when he called the municipality he received no response. “Nobody’s coming.”

Last night things went terribly wrong. The water then broke over the dike and flowed into the street. Most local residents were awakened by the water, the rest were warned by the safety region.

Pumped out

The municipality pumped the water out around four o’clock today, back into the IJsselmeer. Large sandbags have also been placed to protect the houses against the high water.

Next week will be even more exciting. Rijkswaterstaat expects the water level to remain the same in the coming days. Easterly winds are also expected on Wednesday, but it is not yet clear how strong those winds will be.
