Volcanic eruption in Iceland: Village of Grindavik must be evacuated again | Abroad

LOOK AT. Last year a volcano erupted on the Icelandic peninsula

The approximately 4,000 residents of Grindavik also had to leave in November when a volcanic eruption was imminent. After more than a month they were allowed to return home. But now, about three weeks later, there is another evacuation order. From Monday, residents will have to stay elsewhere for three weeks.

The most recent volcanic eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest of the capital Reykjavik, started a few days before Christmas 2023 and lasted for several days. It was the fourth eruption on the peninsula in three years. The lava gushed from a kilometer-long fissure in the earth and the earthquakes caused a lot of damage.

The chance of a new volcanic eruption near Grindavík is increasing again, according to the weather service. Everyone must leave the town at least by Monday evening.
