As early as December 2021, Vodafone auctioned the world’s first text message in the sense of an SMS, which was sent via the Vodafone network. The message “Merry Christmas” (in German: Merry Christmas) was auctioned off as a non-fungible token (NFT) in a unique auction. The proceeds were donated to UN refugee aid.

So, Vodafone made it possible to monetize this milestone in digital history using NFTs. Non-fungible token means that this SMS was sold as a non-exchangeable, digital object. In contrast to cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, the text message cannot be duplicated or exchanged. To achieve this, the NFT was “minted” on a purpose-built blockchain platform to verify and record the ownership and uniqueness of the digital object, a process also known as “minting”. If an NFT is purchased, the buyer only receives the ownership rights. Owners of an NFT manage the associated crypto data in a digital wallet.
NFT Collection
After Vodafone had already gained experience in the field of NFTs with the auctioned SMS, the largest German network operator announced its own NFT collection on the company’s Discord channel. According to their own statements, this is already being planned and should appear in 2023. For the first NFT collection, the company relies on the blockchain platform Cardano.
NMKR, which was founded in 2021 and claims to have already been involved in the creation of over one million NFTs, is responsible for creating the NFTs, i.e. “minting”. The exact properties of the unique, digital objects have not yet been decided. However, they should be equipped with a real utility value and intended in particular for the German market. It is also clear that the first 1,000 members of the company’s Discord channel will receive a reward.
