gthe experts of the Color Institute they came to a conclusion and decreed the Pantone color 2023 that we’ll see everywhere next year: codename, 18-1750 Long live Magenta. One shade Carmine with purplish hues, classic, strong and original together, already spotted at the Spring-Summer 2023 fashion shows and beyond.
For almost 25 years now, the company specializing in colors has been committed to choosing a nuance which, according to art, fashion, design and beyond, fully reflects the tone of the year to come. After Veri Pery 2022, the choice can be said to be even bolder. Revealed on the night of December 2, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute Leatrice Eiseman thus described the Viva Magenta thus: «it is courageous, fearless, pulsating and promotes optimism and joy».
What does it mean
Magenta is one of the shades needed for color printing, along with cyan, yellow and black. The dye was developed in 1859 by François-Emmanuel Verguin, by oxidizing crude aniline with stannic chloride. And the name has all Italian origins: in fact it derives from Battle of Magentathe Lombard city that became famous for the events linked to the second war of independence back in 1859.
The carmine or crimson red that it blends with indicates a dark red which takes its name from a natural dye, obtained from the dried body of the insect known as the carmine cochineal (Dactylopius coccus). It is unthinkable that such a small being generates a color of such power: and the double anthropological basis fully reflects the meaning of the choice.
Long live Magenta, the post-pandemic color
Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Institute, declares that it is “an unconventional color for an unconventional time”. An artificial and natural blend that “highlights our change of perspective, which highlights our need to feel more active and which infuses that strength necessary to be able to embrace a new path with courage, positively and without fear”. So after the pandemic, an infusion of lifeblood towards progress and renewalwhich flows straight into the Metaverse – indeed, into the Magentaverse.
In fact, the Pantone 2023 color has ancient, secular origins, but it is absolutely projected into the future: «in the age of technology, we try to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by cochineal, one of the most precious natural dyes as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has ever known» declares Eiseman.
Where we have (already) seen it
The catwalks of the next hot season are teeming with Viva Magenta looks. But there are also those who have already chosen it off the catwalk: Kate Middleton for example, who just a week ago received the president of South Africa in carmine red coat of Emilia Wickstead with matching hat. A magenta blazer in a similar shade was chosen by Harry Styles for landing at the Venice Film Festival 2022, for the premiere of Don’t Worry Darling.
How to match the Pantone 2023 color according to the fashion shows
Not the easiest color to wear. What is certain is that it alone transmits a clear and recognizable personality. This must be why on the catwalk he is mostly protagonist in key total look, or rests on dresses and coats. A sheath dress slipped for Givenchythe cut-out micro dress for Giambattista Valle. A pair of Viva Magenta pumps revolutionize the look, as demonstrated Loewe Spring-Summer 2023. The other shades with which it goes perfectly: black (Rokh), but also yellow (Marques’Almeida).
And it lends itself as a base for geometric vintage prints and patterns: Chanel for the next warm season, she dresses her characterful tweed suit in carmine, combining it with silver crystal slingbacks. Brilliant and essentially elegant.
