Owner Valeri Oyf has decided to sell its stake in Dutch Premier League club Vitesse Arnhem. In addition, the major Russian shareholder, who, according to media reports, is close to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, will leave the club’s supervisory board with immediate effect. The club did not initially give an exact reason, Oyf indicated in a statement that the decision was made in connection with the current events surrounding Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine.

When selling the shares, “careful action will be taken,” according to a statement from the current table-7. the Eredivisie. In this way, the “continued existence of the club should be guaranteed” and Vitesse should “continue to concentrate on its sporting ambitions”.
“It pains me greatly to say goodbye to Vitesse, but in the current situation I am making this difficult decision in the interests of the club, staff, fans, sponsors and other stakeholders. Vitesse is in my heart and that will always apply to the club and the fans,” Oyf is quoted as saying.
The Russian first joined Arnhem’s supervisory board in 2016 and acquired a majority of the shares in 2018. In England it became known on Thursday that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich would be sanctioned by the British government due to his proximity to the Kremlin and that a sale of the Premier League club would therefore be put on hold for the time being.
Vitesse recently drew public attention after the game against Sparta Rotterdam was abandoned after fans threw objects on the pitch and racially insulted the opposing goalkeeper.
