Important visit in Austria. National team assistant coach Danny Röhl (33) and U21 coach Antonio Di Salvo (43) observed Wednesday morning training at the Union training camp.
Röhl: “We split up. I was at Leipzig and now at Union, I’ll be at Leverkusen on Friday. Hansi Flick looked at Gladbach and Wolfsburg. Marcus Sorg will be with Dortmund. We want to visit as many clubs as possible in preparation.”
Di Salvo came primarily because of U21 national player Jamie Leweling (21): “I’m planning with Jamie. The key will be that he gets off to a good start and also plays at the highest level.”
Leweling’s father is from Ghana. Theoretically, the ex-Fuerther could later opt for the African country – a conflict of conscience.
Leweling: “A difficult subject. I’ve already dealt with this too much. I can’t come up with a solution. Ghana got in touch a year and a half ago. Now it’s a huge honor to be a Germany U21 international.”
Leweling is a permanent fixture if he were to play an A-compulsory international match for Germany or Ghana. That also drives the DFB. Di Salvo: “It’s our job to talk to the players who have a second citizenship or a migration background. It is important to show them a way and to see what their thoughts are.”
So Unions Leweling faces a difficult decision.
