Visible motorcyclists are safer on the road

The motorcycle season has started. But perhaps not everyone is counting on the two-wheelers – and they overlook them with sometimes fatal consequences. Bikers can also improve their visibility themselves.

Striking, high-contrast motorcycle clothing is a big plus for visibility and thus safety on the motorcycle. The Institute for Two-wheeler Safety (ifz) informs that a distinctive helmet can also be of great service.

At the start of the season, other road users are not always prepared for the motorcyclists and overlook them, also because of their narrow silhouette.

Bikers can also increase their visibility a little if they move their upper body slightly on the machine from time to time while riding. According to the ifz, this can stimulate perception in others and break through monotony.

It also helps to slightly change the driving line from time to time. It is important that the steering movements required for this are only small, controlled impulses, says Matthias Haasper from ifz. So don’t make sweeping slalom movements. These could delay or impede necessary reactions such as braking.
