In contrast to previous summers, the corona numbers remain very high this year.

755 patients were hospitalized with Covid-19 on Saturday. 63 of them in an intensive care unit. This means that 5.7 percent of Berlin’s intensive care beds are occupied by Covid 19 patients.

According to the official count, a total of 1,151,255 Berliners have been infected since the beginning of the pandemic. Around 3,300 new cases are currently being registered every day.

Reason is the particularly contagious virus BA.5. With this omicron variant, science suspects that even fewer viruses are sufficient to become infected and these are more difficult to combat by existing antibodies. Despite vaccination, it is therefore easier to get sick and get infected again.

There are two scenarios for autumn: If the BA.5 variant remains, many people could have basic immunity and the wave does not occur. It is just as likely that there will be a new variant and the numbers will increase sharply.
