The Breda Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk extends his contract with the club. The English leader reports via social media that the 33-year-old defender extends his expiring contract by two years. “It is a sense of pride, a feeling of joy,” says Van Dijk on the site of his club.

“Liverpool has always been in my head. I wanted to play here. I never doubted that this was the place for me and my family.”

The nearly two-meter-long Oranje-International came over from Southampton in January 2018 and soon grew into one of the most important forces of Liverpool. Van Dijk won seven big prizes with the club, including the Champions League and the English national title. This season Liverpool will probably be champion again.

Career
Van Dijk, born in Breda, played eighty games in the Dutch national team. And in 2019 the top defender behind Lionel Messi finished second in the battle for the Golden Ball. Van Dijk previously played football at Willem II, FC Groningen and Celtic.
