Vingegaard wins (how could it be otherwise) the day after the Tour

Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard won the criterium the day after the Tour in Boxmeer on Monday evening. Not surprisingly, when the winner of the Tour de France starts in Boxmeer, he invariably also wins the local round. A predictability that no one in Boxmeer cared about on Monday.

In the end it was a sprint between the Dane Vingegaard and the only Dutch winner of a stage in the Tour, Wout Poels. Mike Teunissen, who lives in Rosmalen, won the sprint of the peloton and finished third.

The Tour fever reached a true peak in Boxmeer on Monday evening. The village ran out for the man who was still honored in the yellow jersey in Paris on Sunday. And in addition to Vingegaard, a lot of attention was also paid to Wout Poels in Boxmeer. The almost local hero from just across the border in Limburg.

Round of honor on four wheels
Poels’ stage win was every reason for the organization in Boxmeer to allow Poels, just like Vingegaard, to make a lap of honor through the village in an open car before the start of the Tour the following day. A round in which Vingegaard was accompanied by teammate and Dutch champion Dylan van Baarle in the car and Wout Poels by mayor Marieke Moorman.

The lap of honor on four wheels meant, among others, for Danny van Poppel, Mike Teunissen, Wilco Kelderman, Pascal Eenkhoorn and Elmar Reinders, riders who could all be admired on the Champs-Élysées in Paris on Sunday, that they had to be patient before the starting gun finally sounded at half past eight.

Ullrich the last
The yellow jersey in Boxmeer is something very special: 26 years ago it was the last time that the winner of the Tour, then the German Jan Ullrich, could be admired there.

And so many enthusiasts were ready in time on Monday afternoon to catch a glimpse of Vingegaard in the yellow jersey. Already at one o’clock the first enthusiasts conquered a nice spot not far from the finish. Until half past eight they then enjoyed various other competitions, lots of music and of course a snack and a drink.

Because for some along the course, Monday was not Vingegaard, but a freshly tapped beer favorite.
