The city is disappointed with the decision. “This is a loss not only for the children, but for the entire community of Lapbreeke,” says mayor Joachim Coens. “A school is more than a place where learning takes place, it is also a meeting place that connects village life.”

Alderman for Education Lut Fockedey also calls it “a regrettable decision”. “Education close to home remains important, especially for young children,” she says. “We regret this, although we can still offer parents several good alternatives within the city of Damme.”

The Karel De Goede school group has announced that it will work with their parents to find a suitable solution for the next school year for all students.
