Village is speechless after the death of Hebe and Sanne: ‘It affects us all’

The death of ten-year-old Hebe and her supervisor Sanne is also a topic of discussion in class at De Piramide primary school in Vught. “Many team members know Hebe and her parents. It affects us all very much,” says director Denise Hassing.

“Of course we talk about it with the children, because we always discuss what is going on in the world. But it is difficult to be so close to your own village. We do not go to the memorial with the children. However, some team members who visit Hebe and her parents. know well, put flowers there this afternoon.”

The school used to be where the Hebehuis is now. The parents of the girl who died built that house a year and a half ago. The girl with multiple disabilities received care and guidance in the house where she lives with her parents and two sisters. Sometimes she also stayed there with her supervisor Sanne.

“It’s the worst nightmare.”

The memorial site for Sanne and Hebe has also been set up at the Hebehuis. Also in the early Friday morning people come to lay flowers and to reflect on the death of the two.

“It is the most terrible nightmare,” says a man who is briefly with Sanne and Hebe at the memorial site. The fate of the two has been the conversation on the street in Vught all week. In the street where Hebe’s parents live, the flag is at half mast at several houses. There is an online appeal to follow this example.

Hebe and Sanne had been missing since Monday afternoon. On Monday Sanne left Raamsdonksveer with the girl in a black Kia Picanto. She had picked up Hebe at a day center and would drive from there to Vught, where the girl lives. The police launched major searches, supported by volunteer groups. An AMBER Alert was also issued for the girl. Late Wednesday evening, the two were found dead at the Empel traffic junction near Den Bosch. They had gone off the road with their car and had run into the water.

Flowers and statements of support can be handed in at the HebeHuis at Van Voorst tot Voorststraat 4 in Vught.
