Vigil – Investigation on board is on Sky Atlantic: the review by Aldo Grasso

V.IGIL – ON-BOARD SURVEY
Kind: Drama, detective
Directed by Tom Edge. With Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans. On Sky Atlantic (and on demand).

The references are the classic ones, from Hunt for Red October to U-Boot with its recent remakes; yet, in Vigil – Investigation on boarda British BBC miniseries, there seems to be something more.

Not only action, not the war context, but also and above all the investigationthe procedural detective story with all the emotional load of tension and details that are revealed little by little.

Inspector Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) is sent off the Scottish Sea to dive into a submarine to investigate the suspected death (thought to be an overdose) of a crew member.

The surface and the abyss thus end up representing, even symbolically, the two faces of a complex, dark plot, where truth and lies chase and overlap.

The claustrophobic setting gives the series a surplus of fear and drama; the female figure of the investigator stands out in an almost predominantly male kaleidoscope, made up of military orders, espionage and counter-espionage.

The series also opens a breach on the issue of nuclear policies, almost sounding like an act of denunciation.
For those who love well-designed thrillers and closed and guarded world settings.
