Whether another person is currently online or when this person was last online, many people know this from WhatsApp or other messengers. A practical function, which, however, always provides a topic for discussion. If a message is not answered immediately, even though the recipient has just been online, it can sometimes lead to upsets. Did you know? The online status can now also be displayed on Instagram. It is not surprising that the online status display function is also available via Instagram. After all, the popular app, like WhatsApp, belongs to the Facebook family. However, many Instagram users do not even know about this function or do not know where you can see which of your friends is online at the moment.
How to see which friends are online on Instagram
Users can only see the online status of other Instagram users if they follow each other or communicate via direct messages. If that’s the case, there are several options to see who’s currently online or active on Instagram.
- Click the Inbox or Direct Messages icon. A list of users with whom you have recently written appears. If there is a green dot next to a user’s profile picture, that person is currently online.
- If the green dot is not visible, at least the information appears as to when the person was last active on Instagram.
- The green dot next to the profile picture also appears in other places on Instagram, for example in the home feed.
Why is the ad important? The online status can be of particular interest to Instagram users who use the service for business purposes. Creatives or solo self-employed people show how quickly they react to comments or inquiries. Accounts or users whose last activity was weeks ago exude less charm than a person who is regularly active on Instagram and reacts promptly.

How do I turn off activity status?
As already indicated in the introduction, the activity status often causes discrepancies, namely when the answer is too slow or not at all from the point of view of another person. In order not to let this conflict arise in the first place, it is best to switch off your own online status on Instagram.
And so it goes:
- Click on your own profile picture.
- Then tap on the three horizontal stripes.
- Open the Settings menu.
- There you select the sub-item “Privacy”.
- Scroll down a bit and click on “Activity status”.
- Slide the slider to “On” or “Off”.
Nobody can tell when you were last online or active on Instagram. However, you will then no longer see the status of other Instagram users with whom you are connected.
By the way: If you have activated your activity status and still cannot see the status of other Instagram users, there are various reasons:
- You follow the person, but they don’t follow you back.
- So far there have been no direct messages between you and the other user.
- The other user turned off their activity status. Even if you follow each other, you won’t be able to see the other person’s activities.
- And finally, the classic: the Instagram user blocked you.
