Van Bommel is the fourth football descendant in the Van Bommel/Van Marwijk family, after his grandfather Bert, father Mark and brother Thomas. Thomas and Ruben are teammates at MVV, where Van Marwijk was also under contract between 1978 and 1986. Pa Van Bommel started his career a little further north in Limburg, at Fortuna Sittard.
