Aajd Wief Berpke, the symbol of the Valkenburg carnival, drowned during the flood disaster last summer. That is why the Auw Wiever, when they heard that carnival was allowed to continue, hastily made a temporary doll last week.
Traditionally, the Valkenburgse Auw Wiever kicks off the carnival in the Geul town on Thursday afternoon. This is done by hanging ‘Berpke’. But the doll, which has been the symbol of the Valkenburg carnival for 53 years, did not survive the flood disaster.
Old-fashioned
The ball goes back to its origins this year. Not a big event with Limburg artists, but cozy and cozy in the center. Chairman of the Valkenburgse Auw Wiever, Marjo Ramakers, is happy that we are going back to the origins. “I have received a lot of messages from people. And they all say that they think it is very nice that it takes place as usual in the Grote Straat.”
