On Saturday night and early Sunday morning, the last operation was carried out to evict and transfer the homeless people who were settled in the Jorge Newbery Airport. The procedure was a joint decision of the national organizations that operate at the Buenos Aires airport, accompanied by the Ministry of Human Development and Habitat of the City of Buenos Aires.
The permanence of homeless people in the Jorge Newbery Airport terminal area began in 2023 and there were 160 people sleeping in those facilities. According to the intervening organizations, in the face of this reality, they worked uninterruptedly, offering them alternatives for their situation, while at the same time seeking to ensure that the operation of the air terminal and the passengers who go there were not interfered with.
“We want an orderly City and we work every day to make that happen. Solving the problem of homeless people that accompanies a mental health policy is essential,” said the Head of Government, Jorge Macri and added: “Public spaces belong to all Buenos Aires residents and not a place to live for a few. For a person who is homeless, the City Government has an assistance program that includes offering to take them to an Inclusion Center.”
Officials and specialized personnel from the Ministry of Human Development and Habitat, and of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, together with the Airport Security Police (PSA), the Regulatory Body of the National Airport System (ORSNA) and representatives of Airports Argentina 2000.
A group of people were transferred by program teams Buenos Aires Present (BAP) to the Social Inclusion Centers that operate in the city, where they receive comprehensive assistance: care, containment and professional monitoring, personal hygiene items, shower, clothing, hot food, bed.
In total there were 19 people, 16 men and 3 women. Of them, 8 agreed to be transferred to a GCBA Center, seven men and one woman. The rest decided to retire on their own, claiming that they had a home somewhere in the Conurbano or another province. In the same way, 6 precarious structures that were set up on the Aeroparque esplanade, known as “ranched”.
