At the beginning of 2021, we celebrated Shygirl in our hotlist as one of the most exciting newcomers of the year ahead. ME author Stefan Hochgesand, for example, found that the pop shapeshifter Shygirl disguised “feminist thought experiments as dancefloor hits”. He compared her sound to Grimes, Megan Thee Stallion, Peaches and Sophie and summarized the then 25-year-old musician from London: “The debut EP “Cruel Practice” came out in 2018. Shygirl already puts Madonna, Moloko (with Róisín Murphy) and Kylie Minogue on her playlist, but her own tracks are harder kinky and edgy than those of the upscale mainstream ladies mentioned. Shygirl worked semi-underground alongside acclaimed Electro(nica) producers Arca and Sophie, who passed away in January 2021. So how was that with Shygirl and the shyness? In the lyrics she seems cocky and snotty to vaginal juice cheeky.”
Now, a year and a half later, the release of their debut is imminent: NYMPH will be released on September 30th and is said to contain features with Mura Masa, Sega Bodega and Arca, among others. She has pre-released the tracks “Firefly”, “Come For Me” and “Coochie (a bedtime story)”. Shygirl recently presented her new single “Nike” including the line “just do it” in Berlin at COLORS:
