It is not known whether “Tagesthemen” spokeswoman Sabine Christiansen was shocked by the news herself or whether she simply did not know the name of the prominent musician. She begins “K-Kurt” somewhat hesitantly, then pronounces the name “Coben” rather than Cobain.

The editors were well informed about the importance of Kurt Cobain: Christiansen reports of the Nirvana singer as the “voice of a generation” that was “in search of new values”.

“Walked the Way of Hendrix”

“Yesterday he killed himself by shooting himself in the head,” says the announcer in this program of April 8, 1994. The editors therefore assumed that Cobain had taken his own life on April 7th. As it later became known, the singer had killed himself three days earlier, on April 5th.

The edited ARD reporter, “on site in Washington”, reports on his auto-aggressive texts. “Now he’s gone the way of Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin.”

Fans are then shown who have made a pilgrimage to Cobain’s house and are interviewed about the death of their idol: “It’s a tragedy.”

Sabine Christiansen concludes with the words: “He was a very sensitive person. Good and smart. Not the best qualities when you’re a rock star,” citing Nirvana biographer Michael Azerrad.
