Victory in the last second: Handball Champions League: THW Kiel dramatically defeats Kolstad

As of: December 6th, 2023 9:00 p.m

Pure drama in the THW hall: Handball record champions Kiel celebrated a 26:25 (15:12) victory in the Champions League against the Norwegian title holders Kolstad Handball on Wednesday. Rune Dahmke only made everything clear in the final second.

The Kiel team had an attack after 60 extremely changeable minutes. It looked like a wasted chance, but somehow the ball ended up at left winger Dahmke, who scored with the final siren to make it 26:25 at home. Huge cheers from the THW and in the stands, big disappointment from Kolstad, which had caused big problems for the Kiel team.

“These are special moments,” said match winner Dahmke to NDR. “I’m incredibly happy that we did it today. Even if it wasn’t for handball connoisseurs.”

Kiel on course for the quarterfinals

With their seventh win, the “Zebras” consolidated their lead in Group A and are still on course to reach the quarter-finals. The last four match days will not be played until February and therefore after the home European Championship. The games in Kielce (February 14th) and Szeged (February 28th) as well as the home games against Bitola (February 22nd) and Zagreb (March 6th) are still on the THW program.

First THW goal after eight and a half minutes

Kiel started the game bumpy. The THW fans had to wait eight and a half minutes for their team’s first goal. Curious: When Petter Överby broke the spell, it was just 1:2. Kolstad was ahead for a long time in the first half, but the Schleswig-Holsteiners fought their way into the game and took the lead for the first time after 21 minutes through Patrick Wiencek (10:9). The three-goal lead at half-time was okay in the end.

Kiel weak at the front, but Damke saves the THW

However, the Kiel team were unable to play through the game confidently. In the second round, the nice lead was quickly lost (17:17, 28th). The “Zebras” had a huge problem, especially at the front. Coach Filip Jicha’s team only managed four goals in 19 minutes. Kolstad still only led 21:19 after 50 minutes.

That gave THW the chance to come back. Ex-Kiel player Sander Sagosen was shown red after a foul on Domagoj Duvnjak (52′). The hectic final phase had begun, the hall shook and was allowed to cheer at the last second when Dahmke scored with the last action to win.
