Thanks to a 2-0 (2-0) away win at Karlsruher SC, Fortuna Düsseldorf is dreaming of the Bundesliga again. Kristoffer Peterson was man of the match with a brace.
With its below-average yield in away games, Fortuna Düsseldorf has moved a little away from promotion places in recent weeks. But after the convincing 3:0 in the DFB-Pokal at Jahn Regensburg, there was now the second success in a foreign place within five days.
The 2-0 win in Karlsruhe not only ended the away misery (so far only one win on the first day of play at 1. FC Magdeburg), but Fortuna reported back in the fight for the coveted places. Meanwhile, KSC slipped into the second half of the table – because the opponent had great advantages, especially in terms of efficiency.
Peterson ice cold
Coach Daniel Thioune’s team struck twice in a phase in which a goal from Düsseldorf was not even imminent. First Philip Heise deflected Kristoffer Peterson’s shot into his own goal (8′), then the Swede was there again after a cross from Michal Karbownik (22′).
Otherwise, the two otherwise strong teams neutralized each other. KSC only had one chance to score in the first round, but Fabian Schleusener was saved by Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier (39′).
KSC with opportunities, but also with inability
In the second half, Karlsruhe didn’t have to wait that long for the opportunity to score, but they missed it too. Schleusener and Simone Rapp blocked each other four meters in front of the goal and thus prevented each other’s goal (53′).
The KSC became more offensively compelling, but the sense of achievement was missing. Kastenmeier again prevented the Karlsruhe goal with a strong save after a header from Rapp (59th). On the other hand, Dawid Kownacki also missed the decision from close range (63′).
Fortuna gate boarded up
However, Düsseldorf then had the game under control. Karlsruhe tried, but couldn’t really put the opposing defense under pressure. Instead, only centimeters were missing for Fortuna’s third goal. Tim Oberdorf finished in the penalty area and the ball bounced off the post and out of the goal (73′).
A little later, a low shot by Kyoung-Rok Choi swept just wide of the opposite goal (76′). Mikkel Kaufmann also missed the Düsseldorf goal from close range (80′).
However, Kownacki was just as unlucky as the opposing strikers. After 83 minutes, the Pole should have raised again, but shot an opponent in front of the line. However, that did not change anything about the undisputed victory in Düsseldorf.
Karlsruhe in Hanover, Dusseldorf in Kiel
On the 14th matchday of the second Bundesliga, Karlsruher SC has to pass in Hanover (Sunday, October 30th, 2022 at 1.30 p.m.). One day before, the Düsseldorf Fortuna is required in Kiel (1 p.m.).
