Victory against Magdeburg: Joker Lohkemper makes Nuremberg celebrate

As of: October 2nd, 2023 00:00 a.m

1. FC Nürnberg moved towards promotion places in the 2nd Bundesliga with a win against 1. FC Magdeburg. The “Club” won 1-0 on matchday 8 at the Max Morlock Stadium.

“We defended well and had to suffer a lot against an opponent who was very strong with the ball and offensively,” said Nuremberg coach Christian Fiel. Fiel found that the fact that ex-Magdeburg player Felix Lohkemper (46th) scored the goal as a joker was just as fitting for the day as the tension right up to the end.

Thanks to the success, Nuremberg, previously without a win three times in a row, climbed to eighth place in the table with twelve points and is now level with their opponents from Magdeburg.

Lohkemper with Nuremberg’s winning goal

After a tough first half in front of 33,000 spectators, Felix Lohkemper provided the wake-up call in the game with Nuremberg’s opening goal immediately after the restart. Lohkemper, who had been substituted just seconds earlier, headed in a cross from Jan Gyamerah in the 46th minute.

The Nuremberg team, who started without youngster Can Uzun, stayed on the attack and now came up trumps with quick passes to the front.

After a little more than an hour, Benjamin Goller scored after a counterattack to make it supposedly 2-0 – according to the video images, referee Robin Braun conceded the goal again because Mats Möller-Daehli was said to have touched the ball with his hand illegally during the assist.

Magdeburg without any compelling chances to score

The Nuremberg team, who had significant problems against the visitors’ pressing and clever spatial distribution in the first half, were closer to scoring their second goal, and Lohkemper and Kanji Okunuki missed further good chances.

Although Magdeburg increased their attacking efforts after going behind, they still had no compelling chances to score, and in the end there was a deserved win for Christian Fiel’s team.

Magdeburg’s coach Christian Titz also had to admit this: “We had good opportunities in the first half that we didn’t take advantage of. Unfortunately, things were different in the second half, we weren’t in the duels and we didn’t have to be surprised that we had one got a goal.”

Nuremberg now at St. Pauli, Magdeburg against KSC

The next test awaits the “club”, which is only three points away from the promotion ranks, next Saturday (October 7th, 2023, 8:30 p.m.) with the game at FC St. Pauli. 1. FC Magdeburg will also play at home against Karlsruher SC on Saturday (1 p.m.).
